When Claire and Brian reached out to us, they knew they didn’t want a more conventional engagement shoot - they wanted an experience that could include their daughters too, so they asked if they could have a family shoot instead. We loved the idea of this as an alternative as it really celebrated joining their two families together.
Engagement sessions can serve as a wonderful opportunity to get to know your photographer and ensure that their shooting style aligns with your preferences. In this case, it was even more special because we had the chance to meet the entire family!
An engagement shoot can present a distinct set of challenges for documentary wedding photographers in particular. Unlike a wedding, where the storyline unfolds naturally, engagement shoots require us to craft the event's narrative.
So, how do you achieve a documentary-style engagement shoot, or in this particular instance, a family shoot?
You make sure the taking of photos isn’t the focus. With Claire and Brian, we asked them where they enjoyed going together as a family. We wanted them to feel as comfortable as possible - we know not everyone enjoys having their photo taken!
They chose a nature reserve that they often visit and we simply joined them for a walk. The photos weren’t the focus. Their time as a family was.
We're thrilled to have shared this genuine family moment with them before the excitement of their upcoming wedding!
