Sometimes you just know the photo is going to be amazing before you even hit the shutter.
We were so privileged to be asked to do the videography for some friends - obviously we said yes! Their wedding was on a (very) crisp December day (-4°C!) at Saint James’ Church in the village of Rawcliffe with their reception at the Peppered Pig, East Cowick. We had such an amazing day with Gabby and Alex getting to share their wedding with them. Honestly, they were a joy to work with and such a happy couple!
You might be wondering why this photo even exists if we were taking video? Well, I just couldn’t resist - look at her! Gorgeous! Gabby had moved to the window, taking a moment to herself before her first look with her dad and I couldn’t not take the photo. As much as I know it doesn’t look like it, this photo was not posed - there was no direction from me. A simple moment of quiet before the joy and happy tears to come.
Whichever style of wedding photography you choose to go with, I would genuinely encourage you to think about two key things: light and time.
Light is key to creating beautiful images. Windows are perfect for this. As documentary photographers, Jonny and I only use the light that’s available to us. We don’t use flash. Natural light is our best friend!
Time is another essential element to being able to capture great photos. Most of the time, we will try to pre-empt moments but because we don’t pose people, we can’t always guarantee the shot. Here, we were just waiting and that gave me the time to move into position. I saw the shot, the great lighting and I couldn’t resist. I’m not suggesting that you pause your day just so the photographer can take a picture - simply lingering for a few more moments can be just the time we need to capture the shot.
We aim for natural photography and videography, we don’t pose you unless you want us to. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t have images with the ‘fine art’ style too…we just need light and time.
Their photographer, Gary, was great to work with and we had a lovely time getting to know him and chat all things camera equipment www.garysimpsonphotography.com
